KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
Global Supply Chains—On the edge of Disaster

Dr. Stephen Flynn Keynote SpeakerWe are honored to present Dr. Stephen Flynn as the keynote speaker for this event.

You may be familiar with Dr. Flynn from his series on NPR's Morning Edition, his appearance on 60 Minutes, his book "America the Vulnerable," his 20 years as an officer in the Coast Guard, and/or his blue-ribbon intelligence connections.

Dr. Flynn's message has forced the shipping community to sit up and listen. He conveys that there is a distinct possibility your supply chain will be the conduit for the next terrorist attack—and you're utterly unprepared to respond.

In his new book, "The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation," he contends that shippers must prepare to respond to acts of terror and to acts of nature. "Resiliency," he says, "must now become our national motto."

Dr. Flynn ranks among the world's most widely cited experts on homeland security issues, including providing congressional testimony on seventeen occasions since 9/11. He spent twenty years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring at the rank of Commander. During his time on active duty he had two commands at sea, served in the White House Military Office during the George H.W. Bush administration, and was director for Global Issues on the National Security Council staff during the Clinton administration.

Attend this webcast to hear Dr. Flynn share his blueprint for a layered, global security system that all shippers can help to create.

Dr. Stephen Flynn's accomplishments include a Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow in National Security Studies, Council on Foreign Relations, Consulting Professor at the Center of International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University, Ph.D. and M.A.L.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, B.S. from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

U.S. Ports: Preparing for Future Growth

For many U.S. ports on the East Coast, China has become their major trading partner—and no one anticipates that will change any time soon. Add to the mix the fact that many U.S. shippers are shifting traffic originating in Southeast Asia and India from the trans-Pacific to the Suez Canal route, hitting East Coast ports with new container volume. Whichever route shippers choose, the question remains: How will U.S. ports handle burgeoning cargo volumes?

In this session, Peter Zantal and James Devine will first bring global shippers up to date on the development projects that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and its private terminal operators are undertaking to prepare for future traffic growth, and then deliver a “call to action†to shippers to become more involved to make sure the global supply chain infrastructure continues to evolve at the same pace as global trade.

Minimizing Supply Chain Costs through Protective Packaging Material Selection

In today’s global shipping environment, freight, warehousing and breakage represent some of the largest costs for damage-sensitive goods. Freight and warehousing rates can be negotiated to a small degree, but cannot improve the margin substantially. Packaging material is an important way to reduce costs in all of these areas, and others, to gain margin improvement.

Using a more resilient foam protective packaging material can result in smaller box sizes with better protection than traditional foam protective packaging enabling brand owners to fit up to 40% more units in a shipping container. When combined with the more economical use of warehouse space, this change has the potential to save millions of dollars. Better packaging material also reduces costly returns and improves brand loyalty.
