The logistics lineup
By Peter Bradley, Editor in Chief -- Logistics Management, 12/1/2000
As we finish up the first year of the new millennium (or the last year of the old millennium, depending on your point of view), the world of commerce seems poised for some momentous change. Innovations in technology continue to shrink the planet. The United States is normalizing relations with one-time foes such as China and Vietnam, opening up both new markets and new sources of competition. The Internet promises to transform the way we conduct business.
For logistics managers, all that requires striking a balance between long-range strategic thinking for the 21st century and the dirty-fingernails effort of getting boxes and pallets to customers on time and intact-the very same challenge faced by Phoenician shippers some millennia ago.
In the months ahead, we'll continue to do our best to bring you information to help on both fronts. We'll be expanding our coverage of global logistics and logistics technology. We'll bring you special supplements focusing on major markets and major trends. As we have for many years, we'll bring you stories of managers who are making their companies better through better transportation, logistics, and supply chain management. We'll also bring you reports on all those other issues that affect how you do your job-the transportation industry, career issues, the economy, energy prices and supply, government policy, customs issues and trade policy, cargo security, developments in technology, the business of business logistics, and more.
In addition, we're also taking part in the Internet revolution. We'll be revamping our Web site in the near future, making it easier to use and more useful as well. And we'll offer new ways to receive and retrieve news and other information.
Our goal as always is to bring you the best reporting on news, practices, and management thinking, all designed to help you do your job better. And as always, we want to hear your thoughts on how we're doing and where you think we can do better. Write to us at 275 Washington St., Newton, MA 02458 or e-mail us at LM@cahners.com.
In this 2001 Buyers Guide, we offer buyers of logistics services an updated directory of the major trucking, rail, intermodal, air, technology, and third-party logistics service providers. You'll also find information on the nation's major transportation-related trade groups in these pages. Every company listed in the guide has provided service and contact information this year, so the listings are about as up to date as a print listing can be. You can also keep up with the business by visiting our Web site at www.logisticsmgmt.com.
