Portable Computer Boasts 2D Capabilities

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 3/1/2000

Hand Held Products has introduced a new "image-processing" version of its pocket-sized Dolphin handheld computer. Dubbed Dolphin 7200-2D, the device is a data-collection computer that features a state-of-the-art digital-image camera with an integrated image processor.

The imager eliminates the need for a conventional laser scanner. It enables the Dolphin 7200-2D to read linear codes as well as the two-dimensional PDF417 and 2D matrix codes and can also provide "image capture" capability for signature recording and proof-of-delivery applications. In addition, the unit offers optical-character-recognition functionality.

Because lighting conditions in delivery and warehouse operations vary, the Dolphin 7200-2D is designed to work in darkness or dim light. The computer display acts as a view finder for image capture. The device can capture six images per minute and store more than 100 images.

The unit is ergonomically designed for workers on the move in extreme environments. It is easy to operate with either hand or with just one finger, the company says. In addition, the unit is designed to resist water and take repeated 5-foot drops onto concrete as well as work in a wide range of temperatures. Furthermore, the device, which is offered with two keypad options, has a personal-computer architecture that makes it easy to program.
