Nexus Distribution opens “Chicago Land Bridge”

CHICAGO—Nexus Distribution, a third party logistics provider, announced the opening of its “Chicago Land Bridge” in late March.
The nearly $1 million transportation project includes the construction of a private roadway directly linking a metro-Chicago CSX intermodal facility to a Nexus distribution center.
The land bridge aims to better connect materials from international origins to the metro Chicago area for distribution to the Midwest. The half-mile long, private roadway can be used to transport “heavy” containers—or containers weighting more than allowed on United States public roadways.
According to Nexus, using the Chicago Land Bridge, manufacturers and retailers will be able to ship maximum weights via intermodal transportation, avoid de-consolidating activities at the port of entry, and send product straight to the Nexus Chicago container freight station for storage or immediate transload service, consolidation (with other freight), and delivery directly to retail stores or customers. Expedited drayage and delivery services will also be available given the accessibility and proximity of the intermodal yard, said the company.
Coincidentally, Nexus’ opening of the Chicago Land Bridge occurs as the shipping container celebrates its 50th anniversary in April.
