Printed transistor developed for low-cost RFID market

Kovio Inc., a printed-electronics manufacturer, has introduced an all-printed high-performance silicon thin-film transistor (TFT). The printed transistor is a key building block designed to enable the integration of electronics into everyday products. With a mobility of 80cm2/Vs, the Kovio TFT was designed to significantly exceed previously reported performance capabilities of TFTs. Kovio’s TFT was based on recent breakthroughs in nanotechnology and materials science.
The initial applications include low-cost RFID tags for item-level tagging. The printed TFT can be produced at a lower cost than conventional lithography-based silicon technology. The low cost is a result of additive digital printing processes that include lower capital expenditures and faster cycle times. In order to accelerate the commercialization of its technology, Kovio has signed two separate joint development and supply agreements with Toppan Forms Co., a printable electronics company, and Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. a provider of fare collection systems for public transport.
