Norfolk Southern adds projects to reduce backups

Norfolk Southern Corp. says it will spend $250 million in an effort to remove traffic bottlenecks and enhance operations on its expanded rail system. Norfolk Southern and its major rival in the East, CSX Transportation, have met with widespread criticism by shippers since they divided up the former Conrail network in June. Shippers have complained that service has suffered under the new regime.
The latest improvements announced by Norfolk Southern would be in addition to improvements already completed as part of the Conrail takeover, the company says.
The program includes additional double-tracking and improved signaling on the "Penn Route," Norfolk Southern's main east-west route between Chicago and northern New Jersey and Philadelphia; capacity enhancements on core routes in Ohio to improve service between the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast; and creation of a bypass route around the growing Atlanta market by upgrading the rail, crossties, and bridges on a former secondary line.
