Over the past few years, the leading regional LTL players have shaken the dead weight from their campaigns and the most vibrant have worked diligently to re-vamp their message to their local constituencies. If today’s regional players were to raise a collective voice from the podium they would most certainly shout, “This is not your grandpa’s LTL.”

Regionals have expanded services, they’ve opened their arms and formed alliances, and they’ve added technology that has greatly improved tracking, reliance, and speed—and shippers using this category of carriage are taking notice. In fact, three of the four categories in this segment saw improvements in overall weighted averages this year.

In the hotly contested Northeast & Mid-Atlantic region, five carriers scored above the weighted average of 34.46. As a matter of fact, it’s the same five that won last year as well. Worthy of note, 2008 marks the fifth year in a row that A. Duie Pyle and New Penn Motor Express have put up points that beat the overall weighted average.

Down South, we see a repeat of 2007 winners as well—and in the exact order of weighted scores. As it did last year, Southeastern Freight Lines put up the top score in the category with a weighted score of 36.62, a very slight drop from last year’s leading score.

In the Midwest/North Central region there’s simply no contest. Year after year Con-way Freight dominates this region. As a matter of fact, the carrier appears to be adding to its lead, putting up slightly higher numbers this year in On-Time Performance (11.44), Value (9.19), Information Technology (4.73), and Equipment & Operations (4.40).

The West region is the only category in the LTL segment where we saw the overall weighted score slightly decline yet the overall winners improved by a few tenths of a point. Con-way Fright (35.31) wins in this category for the fourth year in a row, Lynden Transport, the overall winner (37.67) makes it three in a row, and Estes West (34.24) makes it two years in a row.
