Ocean Freight--Columbus Line, TMM, and Maruba will offer fixed-day direct calls linking San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver with major ports in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, and Chile. Evergreen has launched direct service between Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and Yantian, China, following China's approval of a plan allowing Taiwan-flag carriers to call directly at Chinese ports, without transshipping through third countries.

Airfreight--SAS Cargo has opened a 20,840 square-foot cargo-handling facility at Oslo's new Gardermoen Airport. The facility includes a 58-station bar-code-driven automated sortation system designed for heavy cargo, express shipments, mail, and a wide variety of specialized cargo. DHL Worldwide Express has opened a 50,000 square-foot "Express Logistics Center" in Miami that will offer inventory-management services to help customers centralize distribution of goods to Latin America. Air France has inaugurated "G1XL," Europe's largest airfreight handling facility. The one-million square-foot terminal features driverless, wire-guided pallet movers, automatic pallet tracking, and expanded use of bar coding.

Freight Forwarders--United Shipping Inc., a global network of small forwarders and customs brokers, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since its founding in 1988, the organization has grown to include 80 members in 43 countries. USF Seko Worldwide has acquired the Golden Eagle Group. Houston-based Golden Eagle and its subsidiaries offer international freight-forwarding, customs brokerage, and project-management services. Consolidators International, an airfreight wholesaler, now operates seven days per week. The Australia-New Zealand specialist has arranged space on FedEx's Sunday Los Angeles-to-Sydney flight to accommodate weekend business.
