Manufacturers of trucks and ships are starting to see an uptick in the prices they pay for internal combustion engines and parts. In April 1999, average prices for these engines rose 1.6% from April 1998 levels. The problem for engine manufacturers does not lurk in their bill of materials. Rather, it appears to lie in the production end: Direct labor costs jumped 10.3% in April 1999 from year-ago levels.
