Identec Announces New RFID Technologies

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 2/1/1999

Identec Solutions Inc. has completed the first phase of development of its Automatic Remote Communication (ARC) technology. The system, which is designed to communicate large amounts of data between radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags and readers, includes three versions of radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags and a proprietary, hand-held computer.

The I-Q8t RFID tag is a read/write tag that combines 8K of on-board memory with a temperature-data logger--a capability available in no other RFID tag, says the manufacturer. It is designed for monitoring perishable goods throughout the supply chain. The I-Q8 tag is a read/write tag with 8K memory similar to the I-Q8t, but without temperature-logging capability. The I-QR is a fixed-code, read-only tag. The tags can simultaneously transmit large amounts of data to a host computer.

The i-COM hand-held computer, which includes a built-in modem, reads and writes to Identec's RFID tags. It also can read low-frequency, passive tags as well as bar codes. According to the manufacturer, it is the only data-capture equipment capable of reading data from both RFID and bar-code data sources. 138
