Railroad shipping: AAR says weekly carload volumes up 5.6 percent

WASHINGTON—Freight traffic volumes on United States railroads for the week ending January 19 were up compared to the same timeframe last year for the second straight week, according to data recently released by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Weekly carload freight, which does not include intermodal data, came in at 325,415 cars, which was up 5.6 percent compared to the same week last year, said the AAR. Carload freight loadings were up 10.0 percent in the West and 0.1 percent in the East.

Intermodal traffic, which is not included in carload data by the AAR, saw a nice rebound from last week with a total of 230,771 trailers and containers loaded during the week for a 3.0 percent annual increase. The AAR said that container volume was up 4.1 percent, and trailer loadings were down 0.9 percent.

Railroad volume for the week was also up, with the AAR’s estimated total weekly volume of 33.6 billion ton-miles ahead of last year’s pace by 6.7 percent.

Of the 19 carload commodity groups tracked by the AAR, 13 were up from last year, with farm products other than grain up 91.7 percent and motor vehicles and equipment up 26.5 percent. Loadings for lumber and wood products were down 14.7 percent.
