EGL Eagle Global Logistics is supporting the reconstruction of Iraq by offering air, ocean, and road shipment services into Iraq through its neighboring countries. In order to manage that business, EGL has opened new offices in Jordan and Kuwait. The company already has flown several Antonov AN-124 heavy-lift freighter aircraft carrying portable power-generation equipment into Kuwait. Those shipments then were loaded onto trucks for delivery to Baghdad. EGL also has chartered a cargo barge (above) from the Port of Jebel Ali, Dubai, to Umm Qasr, Iraq. Company executives are evaluating the launch of weekly service between those two ports.
Canadian Pacific Railway is adding 600 high-capacity lumber products cars to its fleet. The 73-foot railcars can handle payloads of up to 286,000 pounds. They feature cushioning devices that protect against damage and a flat deck with no risers. Eliminating the load-bearing risers lets shippers attach their own risers to bundles of lumber.
Kitty Hawk Cargo now serves the northern California, southern Oregon, and Reno, Nev., markets from a facility at San Francisco International Airport. The move from San Jose to San Francisco affords customers later drop-off times and earlier arrivals.
APL Logistics has opened a 127,000 square-foot logistics center in Mexico City. The center offers consolidation and deconsolidation, purchase-order management, shipment repackaging, warehousing, and other value-added services. The secure facility will serve both foreign and Mexican-based customers.
DHL Danzas Air & Ocean has established a facility in Blaine, Wash. The office, the newest of Danzas' 18 ports of entry along the U.S.-Canada border, complements a station in Surrey, B.C. Both facilities offer full northbound and southbound customs brokerage services.
Dragonair and DHL Express have combined forces to launch a dedicated, overnight express-delivery service between Hong Kong and Shanghai. The service operates four times weekly in each direction via Airbus A330-300 passenger aircraft with a 22-ton payload capacity.
