BEIJING—China has begun railway cargo service to Tibet, four months before the launch of an economical passenger train trip to the remote Himalayan region.
Cargo transport, operational since March 1, will charge 0.12 yuan (1.4 cents) per kilometer for one tonne of cargo. Passenger transport, which is scheduled to begin on July 1, will be priced differently.
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Xining of Qinghai Province to Lhasa, a distance of 1,965 kilometres, is the longest railway track with the highest altitude in the world.
