The national airport system planned to spend about $10 billion per year

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 5/1/1998

The national airport system planned to spend about $10 billion per year in development for the years 1997 through 2001, yet there is only $7 billion available in current funding, says a new report from the United States General Accounting Office. The pressure for funds will fall squarely on the shoulders of the nation's 3,233 smaller airports, as the 71 large and medium hub airports will garner 75 percent of the monies available for development. Current funding levels for the smaller airports would cover only half of their planned development costs. The report recommends a reallocation of Airport Improvement Program funds to aid smaller airports.
