Shippers are the focus as rail plan develops
(NITL) The National Industrial Transportation League -- Logistics Management, 10/28/2009
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) issued a statement characterizing the Federal RailroadThe full preliminary National Rail Plan is available on FRA‘s Web site:
http://www.fra.dot.gov/Downloads/RailPlanPrelim10-15.pdf.
In the executive summary of the preliminary plan, the FRA states: "The end focus is on the shippers and riders who use the rail system. We welcome the participation of all transportation stakeholders on these issues as well as others that may be presented, as we develop the long-range national plan."
The rail agency notes in the summary that the preliminary plan sets forth its proposed approach to developing the long-range National Rail Plan, including goals and objectives for the greater inclusion of rail in the national transportation system.
The preliminary plan does not offer specific recommendations. Rather, it identifies a number of issues that the FRA believes should be considered in formulating the National Rail Plan.
"Railroads are eager to meet the freight and passenger transportation challenges of the 21st century, and having a national rail plan will allow us to set policies that ensure success," said AAR President Edward Hamberger. "We look forward to working with FRA as they meet with rail stakeholders around the country to address the many important issues outlined in the plan‘s framework, including cost equity, safety technologies and energy efficiency."
