The Teamsters rule that doesn't exist

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 1/1/1998

Both Forbes and Distribution magazines recently made reference to a Teamsters work rule that forbids drivers to load or unload within 75 miles of a satellite terminal. The only problem with those reports: Such a rule does not exist.

The reports were challenged by Roadway Express President and Chief Executive Officer Michael W. Wickham, who correctly notes, "There is no such provision."

Representatives of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters were equally puzzled by the magazines' reports, insisting that no such rule is contained in the National Master Freight Agreement, the contract between the Teamsters and unionized LTL carriers.
