In November, rail linehaul prices fell 0.1% from October levels and rose 0.6% from levels recorded a year ago. Average rail prices for hauling farm products, mined ores, and petroleum-related products all saw significant drops in the October-to-November period, down 2.3%, 2.5%, and 2.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, railroads managed to raise rates for hauling lumber and primary metals by between 2.2% and 3.5% from year-ago levels. Selective rate hikes will be the norm in 1999 as well.
