CARRIER COSTS AND DEMANDS AFFECTING TRANSPORTATION SERVICE PRICES

Most transportation-service sectors recorded solid employment gains during 1997. The exception was rail, where total jobs declined by 0.9 percent between November 1996 and November 1997. Air-transport employment expanded by 6.6 percent during the same period, while jobs in water transport grew by 4.5 percent. Trucking-sector employment expanded by a more modest 3.0 percent, and total employment in warehousing grew a solid 4.4 percent during 1997.
