Hot demand for heavy-duties

High demand means a long wait for buyers of heavy trucks. The trucks on order are likely to carry plenty of power and plenty of extras in order to keep drivers happy.

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 3/1/1998

Freightliner Corp. has reintroduced the heavy-truck line it purchased from Ford Motor Co. last year as the Sterling Truck Corp. The company has brought back the popular Class 7 and 8 Cargo, a low cabover tractor, with some changes. Beginning in July, it will be available as a single- or tandem-axle tractor. Two models of the Cargo are available: the SC7000, with GVWRs of 25,000 to 35,000 pounds, and the SC8000, with GVWRs starting at 33,000 pounds and climbing to 52,000 pounds with the introduction of the tandem axle in July.

A new vehicle, the Sterling L7500, is available in single- and tandem-axle truck and tractor configurations. The vehicle is aimed at distribution applications where tight clearances and congestion are an issue. It is available in a number of configurations with GVWRs starting at 21,000 pounds up to 80,000 pounds in a tractor-trailer configuration.
