Trade deficit grows

Exports dropped by $8.2 billion last year. Hardest hit were industrial supplies and materials, which fell by $10.3 billion. Imports, meanwhile, were up $41.7 billion from 1997 levels. The result: a goods trade deficit of $247.9 billion.
