Brawny, but not too big

Mitsubishi Fuso substantially redesigned its mid-sized trucks last year. Among the new features are comfortable, car-like interiors; deep-cut side windows for improved visibility; better ventilation; higher axle-load capabilities; and simplified body mounting. The Class 5 Model FH boasts a GVWR of 17,995 pounds and offers buyers a choice of five wheelbases. The direct fuel-injection turbocharged engine, which provides 175 horsepower with 6 cylinders, allows maximum torque at low engine speeds. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; an Allison automatic transmission is optional. The model's frame can handle heavier loads than other makers' comparably sized equipment, says the manufacturer. The Class 6 Model FK, with its GVWR of 23,000 pounds, and the Class 7 FM, with a rating of 32,900, both offer buyers a choice of four different wheelbases, from 163.8 to 230.3 inches. Both engines feature direct fuel-injection with intercooled turbocharging. Standard on the FK is a 5-speed manual transmission, while the FM offers a 6-speed. The FM may be specified with a 10-speed manual transmission; Allison automatic transmissions are optional for both classes. Isuzu calls the FK and FM chassis "job-ready" and "robust," designed to stand up to rugged conditions.
