Brawny, but not too big

Mid-sized trucks have a lot to offer shippers that need heavy-duty capacity for shorter hauls.

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 4/1/1998

Peterbilt Motors says its popular Model 330 offers Class 8 features in a Class 7 truck. The manufacturer emphasizes the model's durability, reliability, and ease of maintenance; its corrosion-resistant aluminum cab and a huckbolted cab and frame construction provide strength in tough environments. Placement of the steering gear outside the frame rail provides excellent maneuverability and easy servicing. The model offers a Caterpillar diesel engine as standard equipment; buyers also may specify custom engines from Caterpillar or Cummins.

A new option since last year is the Rockwell/WABCO "New Generation" ABS (anti-lock) brake system, which previously was available only on Class 8 trucks. The braking system features state-of-the-art electronics, indexed electrical connectors for ease of maintenance, and standard blink-code diagnostics for easier identification of system malfunctions. Peterbilt also recently introduced a 4 3 2 tractor configuration designed for the beverage-delivery, general freight, and lease/rental markets. The new configuration offers improved maneuverability and a lighter-weight, durable aluminum cab.
