Logistics veterans receive Salzberg Medallion

Three logistics veterans recently were honored by the Syracuse University School of Management with the 1998 Salzberg Medallions. The recipients this year were Nicholas J. LaHowchic, president and CEO of Limited Distribution Services; Guenter Rohrmann, president and CEO of Air Express International (AEI); and Mary Lou Fox, senior vice president of Manugistics Corp.The presentations were made at the 47th annual Harry E. Salzberg Lecture Program last month at the university, located in Syracuse, N.Y. The awards recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of logistics and transportation or whose ideas and policies have reshaped the industry.
LaHowchic, recipient of the Salzberg Leadership Medallion, is widely recognized as a leading thinker in supply-chain efficiency and technology applications. During stints with Nabisco Inc. and Colgate Palmolive Inc., he was involved in developing manufacturing planning, inventory, and forecasting systems. As president of Becton-Dickinson Supply Chain Services, he was a leader in an industrywide initiative called Efficient Healthcare Consumer Response. That initiative identified $11 billion in potential benefits from improved supply-chain efficiency.
Rohrmann received the Salzberg Practitioner Medallion. He was cited for pioneering the concept of logistics and transportation as integral parts of supply-chain management. Rohrmann has been with AEI, the nation's oldest and largest airfreight forwarder, for 35 years. Under his leadership, the company has grown to a $1.5-billion concern.
Fox, recipient of the Salzberg Concept Medallion, is senior vice president of product and industry marketing for Manugistics, a provider of supply-chain management software. She previously was senior vice president of the company's professional services group. Fox was recognized for her role in the development of supply-chain management software technology and in identifying leading practices in supply-chain management. In 1995, she was named Logistician of the Year by the Center for Logistics Research at Pennsylvania State University.
