Doing Business

Recent major contract announcements include:

* Wyse Technology has awarded Emery Worldwide Global Logistics a three-year contract to manage a wide range of the Wyse North American operations. Under the agreement, Emery will handle returns management, customer support, testing, repairs, and final assembly as well as distribution.

* Philips Electronics has signed a two-year deal with BAX Global for air transportation services. BAX is responsible for overnight, second-day, three-to-five day, and deferred heavyweight shipments throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It also handle Philips' air charter services.

* Wal-Mart has named Con-Way as an approved freight-transportation provider to support its logistics operations. Under the three-year contract, Wal-Mart vendors route LTL shipments via Con-Way to distribution centers in the 11 Western states.

* Staples Inc. has selected RockPort's Rock Blocks as its core software system for managing both global and domestic product sourcing. The global product-sourcing group currently sources more than 1,000 products from approximately 70 manufacturers overseas.

* Carpenter Technology has awarded Penske Logistics a contract under which Penske will manage a large segment of its purchased transportation services. This contract includes all freight, including direct deliveries to customers, moving from the Carpenter manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania to its 17 regional distribution centers across the country.

* Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. (BNSF) has entered into a five-year agreement with The Timken Co. to improve the railroad's service reliability through the development and application of new rail bearing technology. This alliance is the first of its kind in the railroad industry.

* Exxon Co. USA has selected Petrolsoft Corp. to manage its domestic supply of retail motor fuel. Petrolsoft's supply chain management solution, Supply, will automate Exxon's ordering and delivery system, resulting in an integrated retail supply chain management system.
