Border Lines

A roundup of North American news:

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 5/1/1999

* The St. Lawrence Seaway opened its 40th season on March 31. The first vessel to navigate the St. Lambert Lock west of Montreal was Canada Steamship Line's Atlantic Huron, carrying iron ore pellets from Sept Iles, Que., to Hamilton, Ont. The Seaway, which is open year-round from the Atlantic Ocean to the Port of Montreal, saw record cargo volumes, vessel traffic, and toll revenues in 1998. Other recent landmarks for the waterway include the 1998 privatization of Canada's St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp., led by Canadian businessman Guy Véronneau, and the appointment in January of Albert S. Jacquez, former chief of staff to California congressman Esteban E. Torres, as administrator of the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp.
