One railroad fits all?

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 1/1/2000

One railroad fits all? Shippers were hit with another bombshell by the railroad industry at year's end. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Canadian National railroads announced their intention to combine their operations. That would create the largest North American railroad, surpassing Union Pacific. The merger process could take more than a year, but reaction to the announcement was swift. Said Ed Emmett, president of the National Industrial Transportation League: "Coming so hot on the heels of two other difficult rail mergers, this will be perceived as a kick in the gut for shippers. I believe the initial reaction from shippers will be 'Why me; why now?'" Look for details and analysis of the merger plans in the February issue of Logistics Management & Distribution Report.
