Qualcomm buys European wireless company

Satellite and mobile-communications provider Qualcomm Inc. has expanded its presence in Europe. The San Diego, Calif.-based company has acquired the assets of Simac Mobile Solutions BV, Triptech International BV, Simac Techniq Ltd., and Simac Technic NV, which are located in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Simac Mobile Solutions is a leading marketer of land-based modular on-board computer systems in Europe. The acquisition will allow Qualcomm to offer a terrestrial-based wireless communication service in addition to the satellite-communication services it already offers in Europe through its joint-venture partner, Alcatel Qualcomm.

In addition to its on-board computer products, Simac Mobile has developed a suite of fleet-management software products that provide fleets with real-time routing and scheduling, fleet management, and data communications.

Qualcomm plans to use the Simac acquisition to expand its presence in the European market. "By combining Simac's well engineered and market-tested product and extensive industry knowledge with Qualcomm's worldwide wireless expertise, we are confident we can bring the right solution at the right price to the European transportation industry," says George Mansho, vice president and general manager of international business for Qualcomm's Wireless Business Solutions.

Qualcomm began providing mobile communications for the transportation industry in 1988. It currently offers vehicle-tracking and two-way satellite-communication services in 35 countries, including Brazil, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Canada, and Mexico.
