By Staff -- Logistics Management, 1/1/2000
The merger of Maersk Line and Sea-Land Service was completed last month, creating an ocean-shipping powerhouse with 325 offices and 10,000 employees. In July, A.P. Moeller Group, the Copenhagen-based parent of Maersk, agreed to acquire Sea-Land from CSX Corp., based in Richmond, Va., for $800 million. The name of the combined carrier is now Maersk Sealand. The carrier owns 110 container vessels and another 140 charters. Its systemwide container capacity is more than 600,000 TEUs.
