If you're keeping track of rail numbers, the annual Railroad Facts booklet produced by the Association of American Railroads is a useful tool. The 1999 version, which contains financial and operating statistics for Class 1 railroads for 1998 and selected prior years beginning with 1929, is now available from the AAR for $15, with discounts for multiple copies. Order forms are available on the group's Web site, www.aar.org, or by fax by calling (202) 639-2102 and pressing 1.
