With gasoline prices up more than 64% between January 1999 and January 2000, the fact that average trucking and courier rates have risen only 2.6% during that same period may seem like a minor miracle. Indeed, rates for hauling local freight dropped 0.1% between January 1999 and January 2000. Rates for intercity freight during that period were up 2.7% owing to a 4.2% hike in LTL rates and a 0.9% rise in truckload rates. Excluding any fuel surcharges, we forecast overall trucking rates to rise 2.3% in 2000, after a 2.8% gain last year.
