Where, oh, where is that railcar?

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 3/1/2000

Where, oh, where is that railcar? Incomplete or incorrect waybills are adding to service problems on Eastern railroads, it seems. Representatives of Norfolk Southern, CSX Transportation, and the Conrail Shared Assets Area told the Conrail Transaction Council last month that thousands of cars were entering the rail system without proper billing instructions. CSXT says a large percentage of waybills received by fax include errors. A statement published at the railroads' behest in the National Industrial Transportation League's weekly bulletin urges shippers to transmit waybill information by electronic data interchange (EDI). The railroads recommend that shipment information be in place four hours prior to normal service time at a customer's facility.
