Here's a logistics challenge not faced every day

Here's a logistics challenge not faced every day: The Carnegie Institute of Washington is building two large telescopes high in the Chilean Andes--and that means moving some very large and very expensive freight to very remote places. Late last year, Columbus Line took charge of moving the first of two 6.5-meter mirrors from Los Angeles to the Port of Coquimbo, Chile. The mirror, which weighs 9.5 tons, took more than three years to produce and is valued at more than $9 million. The container carrying the mirror weighed 14.5 tons. The first telescope, called Magellan I, is scheduled to begin operating this spring.
