Truck-trailer prices are rising, putting motor carriers under additional cost pressures. In January 2000, the average price for bulk and dry-freight trailers rose 4.6% from December 1999 levels. Platform/lowbed prices were flat, but prices for other trailer types climbed 4.7%. The probable reasons behind these hikes: The hot U.S. economy is keeping demand up, and trailer manufacturing costs are rising owing to higher aluminum and steel prices.
