AF expands again

American Freightways, a major multiregional less-than-truckload carrier, will expand its coverage area to the Northeast beginning next month. The carrier plans to open 17 customer-service centers on April 17, which will extend its service to Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. That will give the Arkansas-based carrier coverage of 39 states.American Freightways, a non-union carrier, has been aggressively expanding over the last several years. The 18-year-old company currently operates 237 customer centers in its existing service area in the East, Midwest, and Southwest. It is also one of the most financially successful LTL carriers. Last year, it posted earnings of $48.1 million, representing 75 percent of its 1998 net income. Revenues in 1999 reached $1.2 billion, an increase of 18 percent over the previous year's figures.
Like other LTL carriers, AF offers several levels of service, including next-day and second-day delivery, as well as time- and day-definite delivery.
