Peterbilt's Model 270 Is at Home in the City
By Staff -- Logistics Management, 4/1/2000
Peterbilt Motors Co., a division of PACCAR Inc., has introduced the Model 270, a medium-duty COE (cab-over-engine) medium-duty truck model designed for markets where maneuverability, driver comfort, and maximum payload are important operating factors.
Medium-duty COEs typically operate in congested city centers, busy shopping areas with narrow distribution routes, and difficult-to-negotiate residential areas. These conditions call for trucks with optimum maneuverability and excellent all-around visibility. In the Model 270, this visibility is provided through an expansive 2,300-square-inch windshield and side windows, small A-pillar design, and large mirrors. A 50-degree wheel cut facilitates maneuverability in tight places.
The Model 270 features a stamped steel cab, galvanized throughout for corrosion resistance. The cab offers easy access with well-positioned steps and grab handles, low cab-floor height, and doors that open 90 degrees. Front- and rear-suspension stabilizer bars help provide a smooth ride.
Although the cab is compact in its exterior appearance, the interior is spacious with a narrow engine cover and short gear shift, enabling the driver to move throughout the cab to enter and exit from either side.
The Model 270 is available in a 33,000-pound GVW (gross vehicle weight) configuration with 12,000-pound capacity front springs and a 21,000-pound rear suspension. The truck comes standard with a Cummins ISB electronic engine rated at 175 horsepower.
