Trailer Tracking Solution Unveiled
By Staff -- Logistics Management, 4/1/2000
HighwayMaster Communications Inc. has introduced "TrackWare," a low-cost mobile-asset tracking product that enables motor carriers to manage their trailers more effectively.
TrackWare consists of a remote unit that is attached to the exterior of a trailer. Each unit includes a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receiver, a Cellemetry-enabled cellular transceiver, a microprocessor, antenna, battery, and cables. The unit is powered by a rechargeable battery that operates for 30 to 60 days on an untethered trailer and automatically recharges when connected to a tractor.
The system also includes a software application that displays the trailer's location details and status information. Users can choose to receive scheduled reports up to four times per day. They also may elect to receive trailer "event" information, for example, when a trailer is connected or disconnected from a tractor. TrackWare can be used alone on a PC or integrated into existing fleet-management software.
The hardware costs about $500 per unit with a base service fee that varies depending upon the level of service the customer requires.
