BNSF and NS launch transcontinental service

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 7/1/2000

In late May, the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. and the Norfolk Southern Railway Co. began offering a nonstop transcontinental intermodal service between the West Coast, the Southwest, and the Southeastern United States.

The service links Richmond, Modesto, Fresno, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino-all in California-and Phoenix, Ariz., with Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; and Jacksonville, Fla. BNSF provides service between the West Coast and Dallas, while NS provides service between Dallas and the Southeast, in part through an agreement with the Kansas City Southern Railway Co.

The carriers say the new service provides shippers with fifth-morning availability for both westbound and eastbound freight moving between southern California and Atlanta.
