Unova sells Amtech tag division

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 9/1/2000

A top maker of radio-frequency tags has been sold. TransCore Inc. of Harrisburg, Pa., recently acquired Dallas-based Amtech Systems, a division of Intermec Technologies Corp., a Unova Inc. company. The sale price for Amtech was not disclosed.

The selloff does not represent a parting of the ways, however: Unova will retain a minority equity stake in TransCore. In addition, TransCore will become the exclusive reseller of Intermec's Intellitag radio-frequency identification technology for electronic toll collection, traffic management, and other industry applications.

TransCore provides information technology and management systems designed to help government and businesses manage transportation operations. Founded in 1984, Amtech is a leading provider of wireless identification and tracking technologies, which are used by both the motor carrier and rail industries. Amtech recently introduced a paper-thin, batteryless read/write tag based upon Intellitag technology that's priced below $10.
