Intermec Unveils New Handheld Computer

Early next year, Intermec Technologies will roll out its new 700 Handheld Computer, which supports a variety of wireless local area networking standards, including Bluetooth, WiFi (802.11b), and CDPD. The unit's support of Bluetooth wireless communications, in particular, eliminates the need for cables and simplifies connections to peripheral devices like printers and cell phones. Options include an external modem to allow batch downloads of data via conventional telephone lines and vehicle and desktop docking stations. The device also has an internal bar-code scanner that reads conventional linear codes as well as PDF417.

The handheld computer runs on the commercial version of Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system. It can handle several 32-bit Windows CE applications, including Intermec's RoutePower software.

The postcard-size device weighs less than 16 ounces. Based on Intel's 206 MHz StrongARM SA-1110 processor, the 700 has 32 MB of RAM and a compact flash slot for additional flash memory.

Intermec says the rechargeable lithium ion battery offers eight to 10 hours of continuous use on a single charge, making it ideal for a full shift's work.

Symbol Introduces Family of Mobile Computers

Symbol Technologies has unveiled a series of mobile computing devices for wireless wide-area networks (WWANs). The new units include Symbol's SPT 1700 Palm OS-devices, Symbol's PPT 2700 Pocket PC-based devices, and Symbol's PDT 7500 Windows CE or DOS devices. The WWAN-enabled mobile computers run on either of two networks: the European-standard network GSM or CDPD.

The SPT 1700 series is a pen-based family of products designed for use in a variety of industries. The units' rugged housing and integrated scanner, coupled with their ergonomic design, make the SPT 1700 terminals suitable for use by mobile sales representatives who need to transmit orders, confirm shipments, and check inventory levels while on the road.

Symbol's PPT 2700 series units combine rugged durability and bar-code scanning capabilities on the Microsoft Pocket PC platform, allowing users to capture and communicate data.

The PDT 7500 series models are lightweight, key-based handheld terminals with advanced bar-code scanning, data processing, and communications features.
