By Staff -- Logistics Management, 6/1/1999
The U.S. Department of Transportation has released a new accounting tool, called "Transportation Satellite Accounts" (TSA), which measures the value of transportation services provided by both in-house and for-hire carriers in the United States. Among TSA's findings: Transportation services contributed about $313 billion to the total value added in the U.S. economy in 1992 (the latest year for which economic census data were available); trucking accounted for 65 percent of the total value added by transportation services, far surpassing air (13 percent) and railroads (11 percent); and for-hire transportation generated $6 billion between 1992 and 1996.
