The average price for hauling non-local agricultural products by truck soared 8.3% from March to April 1999. That one-month surge placed trucking rates for agricultural products up 8.6% above year-ago levels. Rates for hauling general freight by truck were much more stable in April. Less-than-truckload rates rose 0.4% from rates recorded the previous month and were up 8.4% from the corresponding period in 1998. Truckload rates were unchanged from March and were up just 0.6% from year-ago levels.
