Caterpillar Redesigns Electric Trucks

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 6/1/1999

Caterpillar Lift Trucks has introduced a series of three-wheeled electric lift trucks that redefine the company's electric-powered product line, according to the manufacturer.

The new Models EP16KT and EP20KT sit-down, counterbalanced lift trucks boast improved performance, ergonomics, and styling. The three-wheeled trucks have lifting capacities between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds, and feature an updated operator compartment, enhanced visibility through the mast and carriage, more battery-compartment capacity, and simple, reliable electric controls.

The operator's compartment includes conveniences that make portable items such as clipboards easily accessible without interfering with visibility or access to controls. The low entry step and large grab bar provide easy on/off access for drivers. Floor space in the driver's compartment is larger than in previous models.

Narrower and deeper mast channels enhance visibility. Square carriage bars, rather than the traditional rectangular shape, allow for more spacing between the bars for increased visibility. A unique feature is the three-wheelers' dual-steer tire system. The dual rear-steer tires increase tire life, provide for better traction, displace weight over a greater area, and reduce bearing and spindle loads.

The new models include a simplified MicroCommand SX transistor controller, which offers improved performance, reliability, and serviceability. This system requires no directional contactors and thus eliminates problems that commonly are caused by worn contactor assemblies.
