Between June 1997 and June 1998, total U.S. employment grew by 2.5%. Transportation employment echoed that trend, increasing 2.6% in the trucking sector and 2.8% in waterborne freight. Rail-sector jobs, though, increased by only 0.8%, while air-transport jobs fell by 0.1%. Weekly wage growth for that same period has averaged 3.5% for the waterborne sector and 2.8% for trucking. Weekly earnings for rail workers fell by 5.3%.
