Water

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 8/1/1999

Ouch! The average rate for inbound deep-sea foreign transportation of freight jumped a whopping 64.2% from May to June 1999. The inbound liner price hike helped push up the cost of shipping freight by water by 10.9% overall. These statistics are tough to track, with rates rising sharply one month and falling the next. In general, however, the trend in water rates has been to rise. From year-ago levels, water transport rates rose 3.2% in the first quarter of 1999 and 4.9% in the second quarter. Rates are forecast to fall in the final half of 1999.
