By Staff -- Logistics Management, 8/1/1999
Although most major ship-building activity now takes place outside the United States, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics continues to track it. According to this source, the average price of a new self-propelled ship built by a U.S.-based manufacturer has risen 58.9% since December 1985. Ship repair services, by contrast, held price inflation down to 28.7% from December 1985 to May 1999. The average price of U.S.-made tank barges has risen 17.1% since June 1996.
