UPS Publishes Simplified Inbound Rates
By Staff -- Logistics Management, 9/1/1999
UPS has launched "UPS Imports," a program that publishes rates for import shipments from multiple countries in a single currency. The service, which was begun in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, is designed to simplify importing for the package carrier's customers by eliminating the need to convert freight charges to individual currencies. UPS will implement the program worldwide by the end of next year.Other express carriers, including DHL Worldwide Express and FedEx, offer simplified import services, but UPS says its new program is the only one that presents cost information in a simplified, single-source format.
The program replaces more than 140 import rate and zone charts with one consolidated list. Rates now are determined based on "global zones" that are published in the company's rates and services guidebook. The rates are fixed in U.S. dollars but are periodically reviewed by the carrier and therefore are subject to change.
UPS hopes to gain more import business by touting the new pricing system's convenience and simplicity. "...[A] customer in the United States can import from France, Japan, and Brazil, use one account number, know the cost beforehand, and receive a consolidated bill in U.S. dollars," notes Ron Wallace, president of UPS International.
