Border Lines
A roundup of North American news:

Air Canada suffered mightily during a nine-day strike by its 2,100 pilots in September, losing between CDN $10 million and $19 million a day, according to the airline's own estimates. On Aug. 31, Air Canada Cargo placed an embargo on all domestic and transborder air freight. The following day, the embargo was extended to international shipments. On Sept. 2, the airline suspended operations, transferring all cargo in hand to motor carriers and other airlines, including connecting regional carriers that were unaffected by the strike. The strike over wage hikes, which the pilots said the now-profitable airline owed them because they had taken pay cuts when Air Canada was losing money, was settled Sept. 11. The airline began receiving cargo immediately after the settlement was announced, and full service was restored by the end of that week.
