Water

By Staff -- Logistics Management, 10/1/1999

Water transportation rates grew 0.7% from July to August thanks to two developments. First, the average rate for the inbound deep-sea foreign transportation of freight rose 0.6%. That doesn't sound like much, but after June's 64.1% hike, we're surprised that inbound deep-sea rates did not pull back a bit. Also, water transportation on the Mississippi River suddenly has become more expensive. In August, rates for Mississippi River transportation rose 5.2% from July levels and 11.4% from August 1998 levels.
