Companies recently honored for operational excellence:

* BASF Corp.'s transportation group has awarded its 1997 Carrier of the Year Award to: Southeastern Freight Lines Inc., less-than-truckload; Truck Service Inc., truckload; and Schneider National Bulk Carriers, bulk. The award recognizes excellence in performance and service to the company and its customers in the NAFTA region.* The Singapore Trade Development Board has bestowed its highest honor, the International Trade Award, to BAX Global for the company's "outstanding achievements" and "significant contributions to the nation's international trade."
* Canadian National has won Dow Chemical Co.'s "Most Improved Carrier" safety award. The award recognizes CN's improvement in the incident rate for 1997 compared with 1996. CN's 1997 incident rate per thousand shipments was 0.52--down from 1.21 in 1996.
* Penske Logistics has received the Chrysler Recognition of Excellence Directors' Award for helping the company save more than $1 million in material flow costs for Chrysler's Toledo, Ohio, assembly plant. Penske provides a variety of supply chain management services for the Ohio plant.
* Springs Industries Inc. has awarded Roadway Express the "Springs of Achievement Award," naming Roadway as its top longhaul carrier for 1997. Roadway was selected for the honor based on excellence in four categories that included on-time performance, equipment and operations, customer service, and overall service.
* Hub Group Canada has received an "International Carrier of the Year" award from Colgate-Palmolive Canada for outstanding achievement in providing excellent customer service in the International category. In addition, Hub Group Inc. was given the "Inner Circle of Quality" award by Firestone Building Products Co. Criteria for the award included quality of service, customer service, cost effectiveness, and equipment availability.
* Corning Inc. has presented AEI with a quality award for its "outstanding performance on international air shipments" for 1997.
* SPI Polyols has selected Columbus Line as its "International Freight Carrier of the Year." SPI, which produces corn-based food-grade polyols for the food and pharmacy industry, instituted the award to recognize outstanding performance by its suppliers in the fields of international and domestic freight transportation and logistics.
