Global shippers to form network
By Staff -- Logistics Management, 10/1/1999
Shippers' groups from North America, Europe, and Asia have agreed to create a global network that would help disseminate information of importance to their members around the world. As a first step, the U.S.-based National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) will organize a directory of shipper groups. The agreement came during the annual Tripartite Shippers Meeting, held last month in Vancouver, B.C. Shippers' groups from the three continents meet each year to discuss global transportation policies.
The focus of this year's meeting was ocean shipping reform. As in the past, the participants urged their national governments to adopt policies that promote market-based competition in the maritime industry. In a joint declaration issued at the end of the meeting, the participating groups called on governments to ensure that freight rates were set by free markets and that shippers had the ability to enter into confidential price and service agreements with carriers. The statement affirmed their "total opposition to price fixing by liner cartels."
The statement also called for reform of ocean cargo-liability standards, calling current standards "antiquated."
This year's Tripartite meeting, hosted by NITL and the Canadian Shippers' Council, also included delegates from the European Shippers' Council, the Japan Shippers' Council, the Korean Shippers' Council, the Hong Kong Shippers' Council, the Singapore National Shippers' Council, the Thai National Shippers' Council, and the Federation of ASEAN Shippers' Councils.
